Do We Have to Have a GED or a Diploma to Apply to a Community College?

You may want to start college, but haven’t earned a high school diploma or don’t want to invest time and money earning your GED. Most community colleges will accept applicants who don’t have a GED or high school diploma. Once you obtain your college degree or training, the fact that you’ve never earned a high school diploma or GED is of little importance and need not be included on your resume.

When applying to a community college, you’re usually required to take math and English placement tests so they’ll know which classes to place you in. Some colleges will allow you to enroll in their courses, but won’t give you course credit until you’ve completed your GED. Some colleges will give you course credit, but not a degree until you’ve completed your GED.
Financial Aid
Although most community colleges will allow you to enroll, you cannot receive federal financial aid unless you have a diploma, GED, or other equivalent, such as a California High School Proficiency Certificate. However, some colleges will allow you to earn your GED and college degree with the same courses. The New York State Department of Education has a 24 Hour College Credit GED program that allows you to do this if you’re able to pass the community college placement tests and be enrolled in the college.
High School or College
Some high schools have dual-enrollment agreements with their local community colleges whereby you can complete college courses while still in high school. The class credits are applied toward your high school diploma and college degree simultaneously. You usually need to have at least a B average to be eligible for dual enrollment. Many high schools also have Advanced Placement classes where you earn college credit by successfully passing the AP exam given at the end of the class.
Considerations
If you’re planning on leaving high school without your diploma in order to attend community college, think twice. Make sure you’ve acquired the necessary skills for college success. A college counselor could help you make this decision. Also, be prepared to pay college tuition or get a private loan since you won’t qualify for federal financial aid. If you later decide to earn your GED, preparation classes are available through most adult schools and community colleges, and preparation guides are available at your local library or online.
